Retraction Leads to Reporter Exit

Terri Cullen, the reporter who wrote that article earlier this week alleging an Obama "back door" tax hike for nearly everyone, which became a rightwing cause -- and then was withdrawn by Reuters -- has now left the company. Jumped or pushed? She had just come on board a month ago, and had spent many years as a top WSJ staffer. NYT reports:
Her article said that President Obama’s budget amounted to a backdoor tax increase for middle-income and even lower-income people, based largely on the scheduled expiration of income tax cuts passed in 2001. But the president had actually proposed keeping those cuts in place for all but high-income families.

After a complaint from the White House, Reuters withdrew the article, stating that it was inaccurate. But by then, some prominent conservatives had seized on the article, and a few - notably Rush Limbaugh - insisted that the retraction meant simply that the media were protecting the president

  4. Thank you for this news; reporting it is a public service. How would this have become known without this blog? It's all very interesting, if not particularly surprising. Thanks again.

  5. I wonder if Retracto the Correction Alpaca had anything to do with Reuters removing the article.

  6. Well, that didn't last long. Her hire by Reuters was announced on January 2010.

  7. Must have been the source for the Investors Business Daily article that claimed everyone would be hit by Obama tax hikes.

  8. A friend called me last week and cited the article. He's not a conservative, but likes to needle me for what he sees as me being in the tank for Obama. I wasn't aware of the article at the time, and he wasn't specific about what was in it, so I couldn't rebut. I can't wait for his next call.

Has a web archive copy of the article been found anywhere?

I'd sure like to see the attributions in the article.

If she made it up or used sloppy sourcing, the article is rightly withdrawn. However, allowing the White House to demand withdrawal of an article isn't something a responsible reporter should endure.

So the question is: what was the sourcing for the article?

  12. QinaB: Is your point that Reuters should not withdraw the article if, on second viewing, it appears to have been inaccurate, simply because the White House called Reuters on the errors?

Not sure I get your point.

Journalists should not cave to pressure, but at the same time, they need to get better at finding BS before they print it and dealing with the complaints when the BS detector fails them.

  13. ...when the BS detector fails them...

Um, Terri Cullen has a BS detector that never fails, that's not the problem. The problem is that she has a long history of rolling in BS. She's not the worst journalist by a long shot but I'd guess that when asked for her sources/notes for that article, all she has a talking points memo, probably written for her, by a GOP operative. I'm sure she kinda thought it was true and all but, hey, that ain't exactly journalism. She'll be fine at Reuters.

There has been a new and PERMANENT tax of ~$500/year levied against ALL SOCIAL SECURITY RECIPIENTS!

The suspension of the COLA for two years results in a permanent loss of $500 each and every year for the average social security recipient who collects the average benefit of $12,000/year.

This loss is FOR the LIFE of the recipient!

Do the math! Take the average SS income of $12,000 and add the minimum 2% COLA to make this year's average SS income $12,240. Do the same for next year's SS income. Adding $244.80 gives you $12,484.80 income for 2011. These are the amounts of income we would have had with the COLA in place. Instead, in 2012 when the COLA again kicks in, we will be two years behind. Our 2012 income with the COLA will be $12,240. If COLA HAD NOT BEEN SUSPENDED, our 2012 income would have been $12,484.80 + $249.70 or $12,734.50. This is a difference of $494.50 for the two years.

This amount of $494.50 income lost every year by suspending the COLA (ILLEGALLY) CANNOT BE MADE UP. Using the minimum 2% adjustment gives this approximate $500 loss per year.

Congress' claims they will give each social security recipient $250 this year and possibly next year. This is their attempt to cover up this loss.

The $250 gift does nothing to ease this permanent loss. It is not figured into the yearly income calculation and does not increase the base income which increases using COMPOUNDING when the COLA adjustment is left in place.

Attribute this brilliant disappearing act to the Wall Street whizzes in the President's cabinet. These must be the same brains who invented the spectacular derivatives!

  15. Jessica:

    You've got a contradiction:

"permanent loss of $500 each and every year for the average social security recipient"

"If COLA HAD NOT BEEN SUSPENDED, our 2012 income would have been $12,484.80 + $249.70 or $12,734.50. This is a difference of $494.50 for the two years."

So which is it, one year or two?

Even assuming that your $500/year number is OK, note that $500 per year = $1.37 per day. Add in the $250 giveback and that number falls to 68 cents. This is what you're upset about?

Let me guess. You think it's important to balance the budget but you aren't willing to throw a buck a day into the kitty to make that happen.
