I liked "Crazy Heart" well enough and Jeff Bridges will surely get an Oscar nod for his portrayal of wasted Townes Van Zandt type country songwriter. That's credible enough, but there's also a crazy conceit, and we're not talking about the May-December romance or Colin Farrell, back from Bruges, as an American country singer: It's the always-appealing Maggie Gyllenhaal as a Santa Fe resident somehow making a living, and raising a kid alone, on the freelance salary of a local alt-weekly music journalist. and i think that's maybe more right
Townes wasn't nearly as honky tonk bad gigs or sniffing the fumes of fame... as BJS did during waylon tenure...
or as Kristofferson said recently, "townes was in the audience for a scene we were filming for 'songwriter' (the movie kris & willie nelson made in the mid-80s)... and we introduced him. you could tell by the way he stood up and took it al in, he'd not been recognized like that nearly enough."
it broke my heart, but i knew kristofferson was right.
townes shed a gentler path, maintained more of a poet's exposure... though he could run wild as the best of 'em

When I think back to my first year in the news biz, I wasn't renting a house, I was living in a bachelor suite above a veterinary clinic. :)
