The Southeast Missourian of Cape Girardeau, Mo., will begin charging a $25 fee to publish letters opposing or supporting political candidates.
A story in Sunday’s paper revealed the plan for the new fees, stating, “Every election cycle results in the submission of letters regarding local, state and federal candidates. Because of the tone of too many of these letters, the Southeast Missourian has adhered to its policy of not publishing any such letters rather than picking and choosing some.
“The Paid Election Letter option gives those who want to express their opinion an outlet. By attaching a fee to these letters, it is hoped writers will use their 150 words well to express their views.” -Joe Strupp
Interesting approach to paid content, charging readers to post content. Mil over at eMedia Vitals blogged about charging readers to post as a revenue idea a few months ago, and it spurred on a real interesting debate in the office. Some of us felt that it would be difficult for newspapers to pull off, as it would come off as a newspaper being too old school and not embracing user generated content. Others thought it would be accepted but not turn into substantial revenue. Finally, some of us felt like the idea has real merit. I think profiting from political propaganda might be a good case study. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out.
